Cooperative oncology research groups are not-for-profit academic entities that, with the ultimate aim of improving cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatments, conduct and promote clinical trials on cancer. These groups are independent national and international entities that combine the efforts of medical oncologists and other cancer specialists from different healthcare centers and research groups in our country and act as stable networks for independent cancer research.
In Spain, there are several cooperative research groups focused on each specific tumor type. The origin of most of them dates back more than two decades, and their mission is to beat cancer through research.
According to the latest report presented by SEOM on “Cancer figures in Spain”, 33,375 new cases of breast cancer are expected in 2021. In fact, breast cancer is one of the cancers with the highest incidence in Spain, after colorectal and prostate cancer, and one of the most commonly diagnosed tumors in the world. 30% of cancers diagnosed in women are breast cancers. Although it is a disease commonly associated with women, 1% of cases also occur in men.
Therefore, research in cancer, and particularly in breast cancer, is vital to improve the quality of life of patients who suffer from it. This is the focus of the GEICAM Breast Cancer Research Group, a national and international reference in the study of this type of tumor.
